Boomerang – And I don’t mean the cartoon network
For those of you over 40, do you remember cartoon classics Johnny Quest and Speed Racer?
They were, and still are, a couple of my favorites. Well, now you can see them on Boomerang, the cartoon network for us 40 and 50 somethings that have yet to grow up. We’ve borrowed creative use of the word Boomerang, but actually not in the cartoon network sense, but in the way that a growing number of Cisco WAAS and other competitive wins are coming back to us, just like a Boomerang does when thrown properly. If you are struggling with your technique, please see Eric Wolford.
Since 2007, we’ve been able to track nearly 30 large deals where prospects have purchased or were given Cisco’s product in the past but then came to us when they couldn’t make it work. For example, in the fourth quarter, we won a deal with a leading global non-profit, replacing already purchased and installed equipment. They bought Cisco WAAS - couldn’t make it work. They did a trial with us and Bluecoat – couldn’t make Bluecoat work. We got the order and the customer is thrilled with the Riverbed solution. . Some of our customers shared their experiences with Riverbed WDS in a recent Network World blog.
There are plenty of other examples:
A large health plan – This customer moves vast amounts of data on a regular basis between their SoCal and NorCal datacenters using FTP. Being a huge Cisco shop, they first tried WAAS but it failed – application performance was terrible. Our own evaluation performed flawlessly and additionally, the customer was blown away by the superior technical support that Riverbed delivered.
A grocery store chain – This is a 30 site deployment. This was an extremely competitive win over Cisco and Juniper. Juniper was quickly eliminated on paper and after six weeks of failing to get WAAS working, they gave up on WDS as a whole and headed down the path of bandwidth upgrades. As they continued to experience significant pain, they made a decision to give WDS one more shot which gave us an opportunity to show our market-leading technology. We were up and running in one day and producing excellent results.
A large public utility – This customer was an existing WAAS customer, where Riverbed had not initially been evaluated. After attempting to deploy WAAS for some time, the customer came to Riverbed in order to acquire a functioning WDS solution.
Go Speed Racer, go Speed Racer, go Speed Racer, go!

It clearly goes both ways. That's why 24 hours of Le Mans is always a good race to watch, not just old cartoons.
