RiOS 7.0: A closer look at HTTP Stream Splitting

HTTP Stream Splitting for live video is one of the many new features in RiOS 7.0.  To understand how this feature works, let's look at an example:

Here we have a live video stream and three users at a branch site attempting to tune in.  Without Steelhead and HTTP Stream Splitting, three identical copies of that same live video stream would be pulled down on the WAN, enough to completely take down a T1 link. Not a very scalable solution.

Now let's put Steelhead and HTTP Stream Splitting into the picture.  The Steelhead will detect that all three users are tuning in to the same live video stream and pull down only one copy.  It will then split that stream locally for everyone that is trying to tune in, no matter how many users there are.  HTTP Stream Splitting makes live video scalable.

HTTP Stream Splitting is supported for both Adobe Flash HTTP Dynamic Streaming and Microsoft Silverlight.
