The Top Ten Blogs of 2011: #7 -- The Packet Capture Innovators

7As you may know by now, the three guys who effectively created the part of network analysis called Packet Capture all work for Riverbed.

  • Steve McCanne, who wrote TCPDUMP is a founder of Riverbed, and today serves as our CTO.
  • Gerald Combs, creator of Wireshark, is our Director of Open Source Projects
  • Loris Degioanni, who wrote WinPCap was the co-founder of CACE Technology, who we acquired in 2010.

The three of them appeared on stage together for the first time at the 2011 Riverbed Sales Kickoff in January, and we blogged about it with a video:

 

And then, on May 23, we conducted a Twitter party where we told the story of how they developed their respective products, and later we published the entire set of tweets in a single (rather long) blog post that ran on May 31.
